The Goldwater Institute is seeking a multi-state government affairs professional to join our State Affairs Team. The State Affairs Team at the Goldwater Institute builds coalitions and engages elected officials across the country to pass Goldwater model reforms in as many states as possible. The State Affairs Manager will build relationships with elected officials and coalition partners in the assigned region and provide key operational support to the State Affairs Team during legislative session. The ideal candidate should possess strong speaking, analytical and writing skills and have a passion for engaging in the legislative process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conduct legislative outreach and develop relationships with elected officials in states in your assigned region.
• Recruit bill sponsors for Goldwater model reforms and lobby legislatures to pass those reforms.
• Prepare policy memos, white sheets and committee testimony for use during legislative session.
• Facilitate opportunities for Goldwater’s subject matter experts and national policy team to discuss Goldwater model reforms in front of legislators, executive branch officials and coalition partners.
• Analyze and research current and upcoming legislation.
• Track bills throughout the legislative process in states across the country.
• Other duties as assigned.

Core Competencies:

• Years experience: 3 to 5+ years of experience in legislative affairs, public policy, or working in a legislature or executive branch office.
• A strong understanding of the legislative and public policy processes. Candidate should also have a basic understanding of Goldwater’s key policy issues.
• Strong writing, organizational and public speaking skills. The ideal candidate would be comfortable explaining Goldwater model reforms to external audiences.
• A demonstrated willingness to learn and a keen interest in advancing free-market policies.

Candidate must be willing to travel as needed to state capitols during legislative session and to conferences over the summer.
