SteerBridge Strategies is seeking an experienced NLP Data Scientist to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as part of the Modern Disability Claims. This initiative is focused on transforming the claims adjudication process for the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) by leveraging advanced data analytics, natural language processing (NLP), and automation.

The NLP Data Scientist will play a key role in extracting medical and claims-relevant data from unstructured sources and tuning models using VA datasets to streamline and improve decision-making within the claims process.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• MSc or PhD in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a relateddiscipline—or equivalent experience.
• 5-8 years, Python, Amazon Comprehend Medical, Google Cloud NLP, and transformers.
• Strong understanding of healthcare-related data including EMRs, claims, clinical codes(ICD, CPT), and terminology.
• Experience working in cloud environments (AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure).
• Familiar with SQL, Jupyter notebooks, and collaborative coding environments.
• Ability to communicate complex data science concepts to technical and non-technicalaudiences.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver data science projects in a government orhealthcare setting.
• Portfolio includes at least three (3) relevant NLP or healthcare data science projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Extract medical and claims-relevant data using NLP; tune models with VA datasets.
• Tune and optimize transformer-based models (e.g., BERT, BioBERT) with VA-specific datasets.
• Build and maintain NLP pipelines to support automation and analytics in claims adjudication.
• Collaborate with VA stakeholders to define data science requirements and deliver impactful solutions.
• Ensure quality control, model accuracy, and performance through testing and iteration.
• Document data processing workflows, model design, and tuning procedures.
• Contribute to integration of NLP models within VA systems and infrastructure.

$137,000 - $155,000 a year
