An entry level examination will be administered for Fire Fighter on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 10:00am, Pharr One 1121 E. Nolana Loop, Pharr, TX. 78577 . Registration starts at 9:15am. Applicants must meet minimum requirements and submit an on-line completed CIVIL SERVICE application.

Deadline to submit completed application along with required documents (Driver License, Certificate or Military Service DD214) is Friday, November 8, 2024, noon. Your day as a Firefighter

As a Full-Time Firefighter with the City of Pharr, you will play a crucial role in responding to urgent medical emergencies, which may require you to remove victims or patients from dangerous situations. Your responsibilities will include searching for and rescuing fire victims, ensuring their safety during critical moments. You will utilize both manual and power tools, effectively raising and placing ladders while operating essential fire apparatus such as pumpers, aerial ladders, and ambulances.

Additionally, you will engage in fire prevention practices by conducting inspections and developing pre-fire plans for commercial and public facilities, emphasizing your commitment to safeguarding the community. Requirements for this Firefighter job

To excel as a Full-Time Firefighter with the City of Pharr, you must possess a unique blend of physical and mental skills. The role demands physical agility and endurance, including the ability to carry a minimum of 75 lbs. for 50 feet, and manage equipment weighing 50 lbs. consistently when required. You should be capable of dragging, pushing, or pulling 170 lbs. for 50 feet, and maneuvering up 75 feet of stairs unassisted.

A good cardiovascular fitness level is essential, as the job frequently involves running, climbing, standing, kneeling, squatting, and crawling. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and not exceed 35 years at the time of hire, with a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED). Additionally, you must hold a valid Class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety and become certified as a Basic Structure Firefighter within six months of employment.

Knowledge and skills required for the Firefighter position are:

An applicant for fire fighter shall meet the following criteria in order to be considered for an entry-level position:

(a) Achieve a minimum passing score of seventy (70) percent on the written civil service entry examination;

(b) Successfully complete the physical ability test as prescribed by the Fire Department and approved by the Commission, demonstrating the applicant is physically capable of performing the essential job functions for the position of Fire fighter;

(c) Pass a background investigation and polygraph examination;

(d) Pass oral interviews;

(e) Successfully complete a post-job offer psychological examination and medical examination that includes passing a visual acuity test, and physician certification that the applicant is not dependent on and does not use illegal drugs or misuse legal drugs;

(f) Be at least eighteen (18) years of age and not more than thirty-five (35) years of age at the time of hire;

(g) Be a graduate of an accredited high school or have an equivalency certificate;

(h) Have a valid Class B Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire or after completion of Fire Academy;

(i) Be a citizen of the United States by birth or naturalization;

(j) Be able to read, write, and speak the English language;

(k) Be of good moral character;

(I) Preferably possess a certification as a basic firefighter, as established by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, or eligible to become certified at time of appointment. At or before the time of entrance examination, applicants shall provide either (1) evidence of certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, or (2) evidence of current enrollment in a basic recruit fire training academy approved by the Texas Commission of Fire Protection.
