The U.S. Sun is seeking an experienced
and
decisive Assistant Editor to play a pivotal role in our backbench team. Since our U.S. launch in 2020, we've built a fiercely loyal audience with bold, agenda-setting journalism and we're only getting started. This is a rare opportunity to take on a senior leadership position in a fast-paced, competitive digital news environment.

While the role is mostly Monday to Friday, you will have to work occasional evenings and weekends to cover events as needed by the business.

We're looking for someone who is not only an exceptional editor, but also a proven leader someone with the authority to make sharp editorial calls, the vision to steer content strategy, and the agility to manage multiple desks and breaking stories under intense deadlines. This is an in-office role in our Manhattan newsroom. Candidates must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.

Purpose of the Role

You will be a central force in driving daily, weekly, and long-term editorial output. Working across all desks news, entertainment, consumer, sports, and motors you'll ensure our coverage is sharp, fast, and unmissable. You will hone stories, mentor talent, and make critical editorial and legal decisions, often in real time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the execution of The U.S. Sun's editorial and audience strategy, ensuring we break stories first and own the news cycle.
  • Oversee and coordinate multiple desks to maintain a consistently high standard of journalism across platforms.
  • Curate and optimize the homepage with compelling headlines, imagery, and audience-specific tailoring.
  • Approve and refine content distribution, including push notifications, newsletters, and social media promotion.
  • Enforce the highest standards of accuracy, legal compliance, and editorial excellence across all copy, visuals, and video.
  • Support desk heads in planning and executing major coverage around major news events and exclusives.
  • Provide ongoing training and mentorship to reporters and junior editors, fostering career growth and newsroom excellence.
  • Step into the Editor's role when required, making final editorial and legal calls.
  • Play an active role in recruitment, talent development, and shaping the newsroom's future.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 3 years in a senior editorial leadership role within a fast-moving digital newsroom.
  • Proven ability to manage and inspire a large, multi-desk editorial team.
  • Strong background in high-pressure news reporting and editing, with exceptional news judgment.
  • Deep understanding of the U.S. legal and media landscape.
  • Track record of delivering breaking news, exclusives, and high-impact stories that set the agenda.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
